My Diabetes Awareness

Just recently I attended a Diabetes Awareness Dinner Forum  May 26, 2012 at Max’s Restaurant in cooperation of LifeScan and Johnson & Johnson’s. I wanted to know what’s new with LifeScan and updates about Diabetes Awareness. As a diabetic myself I wanted to know any additional info that I could learn from the forum. During the forum I already know all about Diabetes. But this is a good thing not everybody knows about Diabetes and information is very vital to the people doesn’t know and have relative and friends have it.

I was diagnosed to have type2 diabetes year 2003 at first I was so scared and depressed about it.  My mother side has the line of diabetics in the family and I am the first who had it in my family. It hard at first because my family is not aware about it and understanding how to deal with it.  I was told that I should monitor my sugar before and after every meal and record it in my log book. So that when I get to visit back my doctor she can see if I am improving or not.  In monitoring my sugar takes a lot of discipline and responsibility because nobody wanted to help me in testing and putting the lancet to my finger.

Have to take 500mg of metformin 4x a day and Avandia everyday is to much. I feel that I am a slave of my medicine and this is for a lifetime.  I even experienced having to use insulin during my pregnancy that I need to use the insulin pen to my tummy. Having diabetes during pregnancy are risk on both mother and baby.  Lucky I didn’t have to have insulin in my whole pregnancy. But it really takes lots of dedication from the diabetic like me and the support of the whole family to overcome it.

To make the story short as of now I don’t take any diabetic medicines nor insulin. I see to it to eat and have a healthy lifestyle and if I can avoid STRESS.  From time to time I check my sugar level using my glucose meter. I have several glucose meters and one them is One Touch Ultra Mini. Just reminded me I need to buy strips for my meter and lancets.  If I feel hypoglycemia I drink the Red Coke whenever I needed..

One factor to a diabetic person is the support of relatives and friends.  Without them its hard to be disciplined and dedicated in living that healthy life. If they are not aware of this you can eat all the sweet you can have. But with their help they can remind you the points to avoid.

So if you have a diabetic relative or friend get informed so that you can understand all about it. If you truly care and wanted to help in making diabetic person see that she / he can live a normal life even with Diabetes.
